Beginning of the 20th century Skopje and its inhabitants welcomed it with numerous civilizational benefits. Elements of a modern city are set up with the preparation of the first urban plan, with the construction of a water supply network, with the formation and arrangement of the City Park. It is also invested in energy sources, electric lighting is installed, and, most importantly, the foundations of organized cleaning of the streets, collection of garbage and its removal are struck.
At that time, Skopje was spreading rapidly. The number of inhabitants and neighborhoods (registered total of 76) is increasing, the first paving of the streets and their expansion are taking place, there are activities for initial regulation of the river Vardar as a flood prevention, and the first auto-sprinklers for washing the streets . The removal of garbage with carts is abandoned and trucks are purchased for this purpose.
With these changes, Skopje gets a place among, until then, the rare Balkan cities that have devoted adequate attention to communal hygiene and raising the awareness of the citizens for the preservation and promotion of city cleanliness.
